Boss Jin had nearly had his way; the prey was already at his lips, and then it slipped through his fingers. How could he not be furious? Though the sudden appearance of the man before him had startled him badly, he still had no intention of giving up such a lovely little thing. Just look at her—so fresh, so delicate.

“Who are you? Where the hell did you come from?” Boss Jin sneered, then lifted his hands as if to call for someone.

“I’m her man.”

Faced with such a question, Jiang Chengyan had only this one answer.

Why? Because he was her man.

“Someone like you?” Boss Jin swept Jiang Chengyan from head to toe. Perhaps because he had seen too many poor young men before, he did not resort to brute force at once. Instead, he began to press down on Jiang Chengyan psychologically. “Young man, I’ve seen plenty of penniless types like you. Do you really think love can be sustained on water alone? You can’t afford to keep a woman like this. A woman like her needs money to be properly maintained. Do you think you have what it takes?”

Boss Jin would have been better off keeping his mouth shut. The moment he spoke, a strange smile slowly crept onto Jiang Chengyan’s otherwise expressionless face.

Without so much as a sound, Boss Jin was suddenly brought down by Jiang Chengyan. Half-crouching there, one foot planted on Boss Jin’s chest, Jiang Chengyan met those terrifying eyes and let out a faint laugh. “Then do you think you’re worthy of keeping my woman?”

Boss Jin had someone’s foot on his chest, making it hard even to breathe, let alone argue.

Not a single word could force its way out. Seeing that this man truly meant to kill, Boss Jin’s gaze shifted with difficulty, and then he suddenly spotted the small figure huddled by the doorway. His hand jerked up and pointed in Bai Yan’s direction.

When Jiang Chengyan looked over, Bai Yan had curled herself into a tiny ball, trembling nonstop. She kept her head bowed, and it was only then that Jiang Chengyan realized that ever since he had appeared, Bai Yan had not once called out to him, nor had she ever come close.

After a moment’s thought, Jiang Chengyan still strode over to Bai Yan and lifted her straight into his arms.

Only after holding her against his chest could Jiang Chengyan feel the trembling that still ran through her body.

After such an incident, Jiang Chengyan did not go running back to the chicken farm. He could only take Bai Yan home.

He shut the courtyard gate tightly, then laid Bai Yan on the kang.

Taking a warm cloth, he wiped the rouge and powder from her face, then gathered her hair into a little knot atop her head.

The outer garment she had been wearing was also tossed aside by Jiang Chengyan. Yet he still underestimated Bai Yan’s delicate skin; the cheap clothes from the brothel had instantly raised a ring of red welts around her wrist. Shivering, she curled up beneath the quilt and paid him no attention at all.

“Still not going to talk to me?” Jiang Chengyan held Bai Yan close. Seeing that she was still trembling even after coming home, he rested a hand on the top of her head and soothed her with unusual gentleness.

Bai Yan said nothing.

The next second, however, Jiang Chengyan lightly pinched her chin and lifted her face.

“On the street today, didn’t I tell you not to run off? Why wouldn’t you listen?”

Bai Yan looked up at Jiang Chengyan and swatted his hand away with a little paw-like motion.

“You’ve even got an attitude now? Little one, the most frightening thing in this world is the human heart. If you had really been dragged into a brothel today, the consequences would have been unthinkable.”

To Jiang Chengyan’s surprise, his words did nothing to calm her. Instead, Bai Yan’s trembling only grew worse.

“Will you still dare to run around on your own when you go out again?” Jiang Chengyan asked.

Bai Yan froze for a moment, then shook her head and said dully, “I won’t run around anymore.”
