Bai Yan was startled again, so she bit Jiang Chengyan’s hand and held on for a long time. It wasn’t until the metallic taste of blood spread through her mouth that she finally let go.
“Born in the Year of the Dog?” Jiang Chengyan looked at his bleeding left hand, gently pinching Bai Yan’s chin to see her small teeth.
Bai Yan glanced at him, and upon realizing it was him, she ignored him, turning her head to burrow back under the covers and quickly fell asleep again.
“Don’t care about the mushrooms at home anymore? I’m almost out of money for food,” Jiang Chengyan said without changing his expression. The implication was clear: your husband is broke and needs you to come back and support the family.
Bai Yan was still sleepy. Seeing Jiang Chengyan persist in bothering her, she lifted a foot and kicked into his arms.
Given the rabbit’s surprising strength and Jiang Chengyan’s unexpected distraction, he took a hard kick and nearly coughed up old blood.
Wiping the corner of his mouth, Jiang Chengyan rose, his expression becoming unreadable.
Yet, even so, seeing that little head peeking out, he spoke again, “Not coming with me? I’m about to let the dogs in.”
Bai Yan thought, “Damn it, never-ending, huh?”
Suddenly, she leapt from the covers, clawing at Jiang Chengyan’s neck and face.
Though his nails were trimmed short, her scratches still hurt.

“I’m so sleepy! Will you let me sleep or not?” After scratching him, Bai Yan was so angry she was about to kick again.
Jiang Chengyan caught her foot with one hand, his voice deep as he asked, “When are you coming home?”
“You... let go of me! You... you damn bastard...” She stammered out a string of curses, though somewhat clumsily, at least managing to say a lot.
“After being left here for just one day, you’ve gone wild?” Jiang Chengyan bit his back teeth, his voice low.
Bai Yan ignored him and kept scratching him relentlessly.
In no time, besides his intoxicatingly handsome face, Jiang Chengyan’s neck, hands, and arms were all covered with scratch marks.
Satisfied after scratching him, Bai Yan wiped her hands on his clothes, then obediently curled back under the covers and soon fell into a deep sleep.
Jiang Chengyan watched the little ungrateful one sleep soundly. He didn’t leave but stayed there guarding her.

The next morning, when Bai Yan woke up, she opened her eyes wide and looked around but didn’t see Jiang Chengyan anywhere.
Meanwhile, by the river outside the village, Jiang Chengyan was coming down from the mountain carrying a basket full of game.

Early that morning, Zhao Chujiu was just about to head to the county town when he happened to run into Jiang Chengyan.
“Big Brother, you went up the mountain so early?” Zhao Chujiu asked in surprise.
They used to set off before dawn often because at that hour, most people were still asleep, making it quiet on the mountain and less likely to encounter other hunters.
However, ever since Jiang Chengyan married his little wife, Zhao Chujiu hadn’t seen him at dawn again; today seemed to be the first time.
Jiang Chengyan replied with a perfunctory “Mm,” then looked up at Zhao Chujiu and spoke, “Help me find a few dogs today.”
Zhao Chujiu was about to ask why but quickly noticed the scratch marks on Jiang Chengyan’s neck.
He stepped closer and pointed at the scratches, asking, “Big Brother, who did this to you?”
“Who do you think?” Jiang Chengyan answered ambiguously.
