Chapter 120: Mother... Jiang... Jiang Chengyan took me out to play.
Bai Yan had just received confirmation from Jiang Chengyan that she was not a breeding rabbit, yet the more she listened to his words, the more they seemed to imply otherwise.
Are they rabbits really that useless?
Puffing out her cheeks, Bai Yan followed Jiang Chengyan, her head bowed as she walked aimlessly, letting him lead her by the hand.
"What did you say to her? She was perfectly fine a moment ago, so why is she so dejected now?" Mrs. Zhao turned around, and seeing Bai Yan hanging her head like a pitiful little thing, she barked at Jiang Chengyan.
Jiang Chengyan’s ears had long since grown accustomed to Mrs. Zhao’s booming voice. Hearing her, he glanced sideways at the rabbit, only to see her still keeping her head down.
"Nothing," Jiang Chengyan replied.
"What do you mean, nothing!" Mrs. Zhao reached out to pull Bai Yan toward her. Jiang Chengyan held on, but Bai Yan quickly released his hand.
Jiang Chengyan: "..."
"Mother," Bai Yan said, taking Mrs. Zhao's hand and walking beside her. "Am I truly useless?"
As soon as Jiang Chengyan heard this question, his eyelid twitched.
So, she actually took his earlier remark to heart—the one about rabbits being less valuable than pigs?
"How could you be useless? Just look at the mushrooms you’ve grown and the fields you’ve tended!" Mrs. Zhao felt a surge of heartache at the soft, questioning tone in Bai Yan’s voice.
Bai Yan pursed her lips and shot a reproachful look at Jiang Chengyan.
Mrs. Zhao turned and unleashed another torrent of scolding upon Jiang Chengyan.
Jiang Chengyan was already used to it...
When the family arrived home, Father Jiang was still sitting in the courtyard, diligently crafting a wooden cart for Bai Yan. Mrs. Zhao, however, called everyone into the main room.
There were only three stools in the house. Mrs. Zhao took one, while Father Jiang and Jiang Chengyan took the others. Bai Yan looked around and was just about to climb into Mrs. Zhao’s lap when she felt a tug at her skirt. Before she realized what was happening, she was pulled backward and found herself seated firmly in Jiang Chengyan’s lap.
"From now on, stay far away from Jiang You, do you hear me?" Mrs. Zhao glared at Jiang Chengyan before speaking directly to him and Father Jiang without reservation.
Father Jiang simply nodded in agreement.
"I have a feeling there is more to this business with your second uncle. Although Lady Qian is overbearing, she doesn't strike me as the type to commit adultery. If this whole thing is a trap set by your second uncle, then it is truly terrifying." Mrs. Zhao sighed. The actions of that couple truly proved the saying: when disaster strikes, everyone flies their own way.
Jiang You had completely pushed Lady Qian out as a scapegoat, leaving himself clean and presenting only the image of a victim.
"Venereal disease is notoriously difficult to cure; in nine out of ten cases, it is incurable for life. If either of you dares to set foot in a brothel, I will break your legs!" Mrs. Zhao glared fiercely at Father Jiang and Jiang Chengyan, clearly issuing a warning.
However, before either man could react, Bai Yan, perched on Jiang Chengyan's lap, raised a small hand high. "Mother, Jiang... Jiang Chengyan took me to play there once."
Jiang Chengyan pressed his lips together, a flicker of light passing through his eyes. She actually dared to call him by his full name?
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Zhao exploded like a pot of boiling oil, pointing at Jiang Chengyan and demanding, "You took her to a brothel? Have you lost your mind?"
"To have some fun," Bai Yan added, mimicking the tone she had heard earlier.
Mrs. Zhao launched into a fierce, head-to-toe scolding of Jiang Chengyan.
Bai Yan sat happily on Jiang Chengyan’s lap, feeling smugly triumphant.
