Chapter 124: Unpresentable

Although the soup smelled rather strange, it tasted sweet.
“If you weren’t unable to eat pork, I would have stewed you some pig’s trotters. Those are much more effective,” Madam Zhao said from the side, sounding quite regretful.
Bai Yan gulped down the soup, smacked her lips, and asked, “Mother, what good is this supposed to do? Will it help me grow to two hundred and fifty pounds?” She knew that the big sow weighed two hundred and fifty pounds.
“You needn’t ask. You’ll know in time,” Madam Zhao replied mysteriously.
Seeing Bai Yan curl up boredly in the recliner after finishing the soup, Madam Zhao glanced around before asking, “Did Jiang Chengyan go out again today?”
Bai Yan nodded, rolled over, and sprawled across the recliner like a rabbit pancake.
“What has he been going out so often for these past two days?” Madam Zhao asked again.
Bai Yan was taken aback by the question. She had no idea what Jiang Chengyan had gone out to do.
Sure enough, the moment Madam Zhao saw the blank look on her face, she knew exactly what the answer would be.
She dragged over Bai Yan’s little cart and squeezed herself onto it with some difficulty. Then she tugged Bai Yan’s ear and said sternly, “You can’t go through life knowing nothing about anything. You need to find out what he’s doing! What if he brings another woman home?”
Though she disliked this son of hers intensely, she had to admit that he had inherited the best qualities of both his parents. He truly was a handsome man.

“Then I’ll leave,” Bai Yan said. She thought it was a very simple matter.
“How can you leave so easily? If you leave, you must take all his money with you! Let me ask you this: do you know where Jiang Chengyan hides his money?”
Bai Yan nodded again.
Ah, how disappointing. She did not even know where her husband kept all his money.
“See? If he really decides to throw you out, you won’t even have any money,” Madam Zhao said, tapping Bai Yan on the head.
Only then did Bai Yan realize something. “Then is Father’s money all with you?”
Madam Zhao nodded. “Of course. Even when your father goes out to buy salt, he has to come to me for the money.”
Bai Yan puffed out her cheeks and exhaled, feeling that she had finally understood something.
At that moment, Jiang Chengyan, who had been standing outside the courtyard for who knew how long, turned around and walked toward the river.
Father Jiang had gone to the river early that morning to wash clothes. Jiang Chengyan approached in silence and, just as silently, used a stick to hook away Madam Zhao’s favorite garment.
Only then did he quietly return home.

In less than half an hour, Father Jiang came hurrying back, his voice edged with anxiety.
“Third Madam, your ginger-yellow dress is missing!”
Father Jiang did not want to make such a fuss, but it was Madam Zhao’s favorite garment. Besides, if a woman’s clothing fell into the hands of someone with bad intentions, it could easily become a source of trouble, leaving her unable to defend herself. That was why he was so alarmed.
The moment Madam Zhao heard him, she dropped whatever she was doing and ran after him outside.
In the courtyard, the man who had been lazily occupying Bai Yan’s recliner finally curled his lips into a smile.
“Husband, I…I have something to tell you!” Remembering Madam Zhao’s instructions, Bai Yan gathered her courage and spoke.
“Oh? What is it?” Jiang Chengyan raised his eyes to look at his adorable little wife.
“I can’t say it here. We…we have to go inside.” Bai Yan pointed toward the west room where the two of them slept.
Jiang Chengyan let out a low laugh. “In broad daylight, what could you possibly have to say that cannot be spoken in public?”
