Chapter 56: Jiang Chengyan Has Gone Bankrupt
Bai Yan stared at her hands, wrapped tightly and resembling pig trotters, her face marked by utter despair. So much so, that whatever Jiang Chengyan said to her, she barely registered.
“Sweetheart?” Jiang Chengyan’s voice grew more dangerous.
Bai Yan blinked, startled, and looked at him in confusion, “Huh?”
Seeing her adorable bewilderment, Jiang Chengyan glanced again at her hands, bundled like rice dumplings. Suddenly, he chuckled and turned to bring in a bowl of egg noodles from the stove outside. It was something Madam Zhao had kept warm for Bai Yan.
“Are you hungry? Eat.” With that, Jiang Chengyan handed her the chopsticks.
Bai Yan tried to cradle the chopsticks with her two trotter-like hands, but they were wrapped so tightly she couldn’t hold them at all. So, despite the fragrant egg noodles sitting right before her, she couldn’t eat a single bite.
In the end, Bai Yan desperately picked up the big bowl with her bulky hands, but Madam Zhao had wrapped them so thoroughly that a slight misstep and the bowl nearly slipped from her grasp.
Jiang Chengyan sat nearby, arms crossed, watching her struggle to eat, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
Normally, Bai Yan would have thought her husband’s smile was charming.
But now, famished as she was, his smile seemed nothing but mischievous.
Jiang Chengyan watched as Bai Yan, usually so docile, suddenly exploded, lunging at him. And then... he, a grown man, was thrown over her shoulder onto the quilt on the heated kang bed by an enraged Bai Yan.
Her swift movements created quite a commotion.
For a moment, Jiang Chengyan felt a little dizzy.
He knew she was strong, but didn’t expect her to use it on him so soon.
“Feed me noodles!” Bai Yan, like a little dumpling, landed heavily on Jiang Chengyan, glaring at him fiercely.
Jiang Chengyan nearly had his insides rearranged by her sitting on him.
He pinched his brow, trying to regain composure.
But to Bai Yan, he looked as relaxed as could be, still refusing to feed her.
So, in the next instant, Bai Yan opened her mouth and bit down on Jiang Chengyan’s wrist.
Ah, a rabbit bites when cornered.
………………
This afternoon, Zhao Chujiu had already glanced at Jiang Chengyan’s muscular arm for the tenth time.
Because Yuzhou had suffered a rare earthquake, though the situation was under control, the imperial court and the provincial capital had quickly sent people and resources.
Now, a group of young men were helping clear the area and rebuild houses.
Zhao Chujiu looked at Jiang Chengyan again, complaining, “Brother, it’s freezing out, and even if working makes you hot, do you really need to keep your arm exposed like that? Is a bite mark really such a big deal?!”
On his finely sculpted right arm, a small bite mark was clearly visible—obviously, the handiwork of a certain someone.
Jiang Chengyan glanced at Zhao Chujiu, his voice cool, “It is a big deal.”
Zhao Chujiu cursed.
“Chengyan, bad news—you’d better go check on your wife… she’s spent money again,” the village head Jiang hurried over.
Because of the earthquake, every household had received a substantial subsidy, but Chengyan’s wife… today, she’d probably spend all their subsidy.
…………
When Jiang Chengyan and Zhao Chujiu arrived, they heard the village head’s wife advising Bai Yan, “Girl, this wasteland is what Beitang Village didn’t want. You just spent thirty taels of silver to buy it—this is a losing deal, nothing grows on this land.”
Bai Yan lay on Madam Zhao’s back, optimistic as ever. “Auntie, but I want to farm. I want to farm to support my husband. My husband has no money now.”
Everyone: “?????” Jiang Chengyan is bankrupt???????
