Chapter Nine: Do You Know Who He Is?
“Outrageous!”
“How dare they poison my grandfather? I will find out who’s behind this, no matter what!”
An Lan’s face darkened.
Old Master An, however, seemed lost in thought. He waved his hand dismissively. “Enough, Lanlan. I know what I’m doing. Don’t get involved.”
“Hailong, call your father back at once. I want to speak to him personally.”
An Hailong nodded. “Yes, Grandfather, I’ll go right now.”
It was clear—he must have a good idea who was orchestrating all this behind the scenes, but he didn’t want to complicate things further.
Ye Wushang paid little heed. He looked at Old Master An and asked,
“Sir, from now on, you only need to rest and recuperate. Ten days at the least, a month at most, and you’ll be fully recovered.”
“As we agreed, I’ve cured your illness. Now, about what you promised me…”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Ye.” Before he could finish, Old Master An interrupted, embarrassed. “The Hanlong Herb is still in our family’s medicinal garden. It hasn’t been picked.”
“To be honest, when Changchun said you could cure me, I didn’t have much hope. I just didn’t want to embarrass him.”
“I never expected your medical skills to be so extraordinary. It was my poor planning.”
“Please allow me one more day. Tomorrow—I’ll have it delivered to your home, is that all right?”
Another day.
Ye Wushang frowned. He had run out of medicinal herbs, and with the weather turning foul, he urgently needed the Hanlong Herb for his own treatment.
But a day’s delay shouldn’t be a problem.
“Fine. Tomorrow, then.” Ye Wushang nodded.
But he remembered—the other party said they’d deliver it to his home…
Home.
Did he even have a home anymore?
He had not taken a single thing from Lan Ruoxue. To be honest, he didn’t even have a place to stay right now.
“There’s no need to deliver it. I’ll come and get it myself tomorrow.”
With that, Ye Wushang turned and left the house.
“Divine Doctor Ye, allow me to see you out,” An Lan called, hurrying after him.
…
Ye Family Residence.
On the bed lay an old man, deathly pale and gravely ill.
In his hand, he held a divorce agreement.
“Ruoxue, who told you to divorce Wushang? Tell me, whose terrible idea was this?”
Master Lan was trembling with rage.
“Grandfather, please calm down. Your health is more important,” Lan Ruoxue said, supporting him. She spoke solemnly, “It was my decision. No one else’s.”
“I gave him plenty of chances, but he never tried to improve himself. Our separation was only a matter of time.”
“It’s better to end things quickly than to drag out the pain. I think divorce is the best outcome for us.”
At this, she recalled the earlier incident when he hit someone, and her despair deepened. She sighed, “Honestly, I thought that after the divorce, he might reflect on himself.”
“But instead, he harbored resentment and actually hit Sun Chuanlong. He knows how much the Sun family’s business influences ours.”
“Yet he still did it. I think divorcing him was the wise choice.”
Beside her, Lan Ruoshuang chimed in, “That’s right, Grandfather. That useless man isn’t just cowardly—he’s petty, too.”
“All he did was take down two pillars from that rundown workshop, and he went mad, biting anyone in sight like a rabid dog…”
“Wait a second!”
Lan Ruoxue’s eyes widened in shock. She grabbed her sister instinctively. “Ruoshuang, did you just say he hit Chuanlong because you all tore down the workshop pillars?”
Three years of marriage.
She thought she understood Ye Wushang well enough.
What he cared about most was that workshop—it was his mother’s only relic, his sole keepsake.
She’d thought Ye Wushang had hit Chuanlong out of spite over the divorce, but now she realized it was because Sun Chuanlong and Ruoshuang had dismantled the workshop’s pillars!
So she had misunderstood him all along!
“We hadn’t even finished before he hit Brother Long,” Lan Ruoshuang muttered, unconcerned. “And he even brought a vixen to back him up. I bet he’s been cheating all along!”
“Otherwise, he wouldn’t have agreed to the divorce so readily!”
“I don’t care, Grandfather, just give me that prescription for his illness. I have to teach him a lesson…”
Bang!
Before she could finish, Master Lan slammed the table with a resounding thud!
“Utter nonsense!”
He glared at the two sisters, furious. “Not only did you cast him aside, you destroyed his workshop as well. Are you even human?”
Lan Ruoshuang scoffed, “Why is that casting him aside? He’s just a good-for-nothing. Are we supposed to keep him around and support him for nothing? We’re just cutting our losses in time…”
“Grandfather, I only divorced Wushang because we had nothing in common. As for the workshop, I truly didn’t know. If I’d known Ruoshuang and the others damaged the pillars, I wouldn’t have called to interrogate him.”
She turned to glare at her sister. “Ruoshuang, you know how important that workshop is to Wushang.”
“It’s his mother’s relic, his very roots. How could you be so reckless?”
“I don’t care about any of that. I just want that plot of land for my beauty salon. If he stands in my way, I’ll make him pay…”
Smack!
Master Lan slapped Ruoshuang hard across the face.
“Enough!”
“You ungrateful, heartless wretch. How can you say such treacherous things?”
“Do you know what kind of person Wushang is? You two… you’ve truly disappointed me!”
At these words, the two sisters exchanged a baffled glance.
“In my plan, if Wushang could live peacefully at home, once the time was right, our family would be far more than a third-rate house.”
“I thought it would be a blessing—but you ruined everything!”
His voice faltered, and he seemed to deflate all at once, collapsing onto the bed as if he’d aged a dozen years in an instant.
“Grandfather, are you unwell? Why are you talking such nonsense?” Lan Ruoshuang pouted. “What’s so special about that loser? Wasn’t he just a homeless man you kindly took in…”
“Grandfather…”
Lan Ruoxue started to ask more, but Master Lan’s eyes flashed. He glared at her and barked, “I do not accept this divorce agreement!”
“Unless Wushang himself comes before me and says he doesn’t want to stay with the Lan family, as long as I live, no one is to drive him away!”
“And as for everything you two possess now—since I gave it to you, I can also take it back!”
The sisters were struck dumb with fright.
They wanted to protest, but Master Lan turned his head away and said coldly,
“If Wushang doesn’t come see me within three days, I’ll do exactly as I said!”
“Now get out! I don’t want to see either of you!”
The two sisters dared not speak further and hurried away in panic.
As they closed the door, Lan Ruoshuang was still grumbling, but Lan Ruoxue snapped at her, “Ruoshuang, why didn’t you tell me sooner that you tore down the workshop pillars?”
“What difference would it make? That loser still hit Brother Long! If Brother Long weren’t so generous, if this got out to the Sun family, it wouldn’t just be that loser—our whole family would be dragged down!”
She suddenly pulled Lan Ruoxue aside and asked, “By the way, you said before that if Brother Long let it go, you’d persuade Mom and Dad to agree to our marriage. When are you going to talk to them?”
“Deal with it yourself—I’m not interested,” Lan Ruoxue replied with a glare, heading out.
She felt a pang of guilt. If she’d known things would turn out this way, she would have found out the truth from the start.
Though hitting someone was excessive, that workshop was his mother’s only keepsake. Considering Sun Chuanlong and her sister tore down the pillars, his anger was understandable.
Whether it was remorse or her grandfather’s words just now, she wanted to clear things up with Ye Wushang.
But when she dialed his number, he hung up immediately.
She tried four or five times more, but he never picked up.
“Ye Wushang, are you really that petty?”
“I just want to talk things through, but you won’t even answer my calls!”
“In your eyes, what am I to you?”
Clutching her phone, Lan Ruoxue felt utterly disappointed in Ye Wushang.
…
