Volume 1, Chapter 6: Seizing the Eyes!
Li Susu, who had indeed been reborn, cast a covert and greedy glance at Ji Yunzhuo’s eyes, then lowered her gaze to conceal the burgeoning ambition within. She knew all too well that the many achievements she attained in her past life were all thanks to her stealing those very eyes from Ji Yunzhuo. However, the prerequisite for stealing those eyes was that Ji Yunzhuo must first be disfigured, causing her fortune to plummet! And this was the very reason she had returned.
"As long as I can make her disfigurement even more severe, I can claim her eyes all the sooner." Li Susu calculated viciously, unable to stop herself from glancing at Ji Yunzhuo’s forehead. She found that Ji Yunzhuo was looking right at her. Those black pupils were like deep pools, as cold and vast as the infinite universe, swallowing her whole in an instant. Terrified, she quickly looked away, not daring to meet that gaze again.
Seeing that Ji Yunzhuo had set the bowl of soup aside, Li Susu immediately looked up, her eyes turning red in an instant. "Yunzhuo, you... you won't drink it. Are you still refusing to forgive me?"
Ji Yunfan sneered. "With her heart, which is smaller than the tip of a needle, she’d even sabotage her own mother. Susu, there is no need to care about what a person like that thinks."
Mentioning Li Susu, Ji Yunfan’s tone immediately softened, reverting to the refined and gentle persona he displayed on screen, his eyes filled with affection.
Ji Yunzhuo glanced at him, but before she could speak... the soup bowl she had just set down was shoved violently against her mouth.
"Drink it!"
After the harsh command, Fu Mingyue began to force the liquid down her throat, his movements crude. Ji Yunzhuo refused to open her mouth, so the soup was poured all over her face and clothes. The scalding liquid caused her fair skin to turn crimson instantly!
"This..." Li Susu watched, stunned.
Ji Yunzhuo remained calm. Wearing the mess, she looked at Fu Mingyue. They were standing very close, yet this single look made Fu Mingyue feel as though vast mountains lay between them, piercing his heart sharply.
"The soup Li Susu brought as an apology—I don't even have the right to let it cool. Even if I’m scalded to death, I must swallow it; otherwise, I’m ungrateful, vicious, and narrow-minded, is that it?" As she spoke, Ji Yunzhuo shifted her gaze from Fu Mingyue to Ji Yunfan. The burns on her face and neck grew more inflamed, looking jarringly painful.
Both Fu Mingyue and Ji Yunfan felt a blockage in their chests, unable to utter a word.
Li Susu’s tears began to fall, filled with self-reproach and guilt. "I’m sorry, it’s all my fault! But I didn't know the soup was so hot."
Upon hearing this, Fu Mingyue immediately recalled the scene in the underground parking garage, where Ji Yunzhuo had said nothing, and when he and Li Susu had lightly touched her, she had collapsed. It was the same now; she didn't drink it, nor did she say it was too hot!
At this thought, Fu Mingyue’s expression turned cold. "Susu is right. How were we to know it was hot if you didn't say anything? You’ve really gone to great lengths to make me feel guilty, haven't you?"
Ji Yunfan looked on with a knowing expression, clearly agreeing with Fu Mingyue. Their entire family knew just how far his sister would go to gain Fu Mingyue’s attention. Feeling that Fu Mingyue was in a difficult position, Ji Yunfan sighed. "Mingyue, my sister is indeed willful and extreme. I am truly sorry."
Ji Yunzhuo, whose face was burning with pain, felt a deep chill throughout her body. She reached out and pressed the nurse call button, then looked at the three people standing before her, questioning them word by word.
"So, as the patient, it is my responsibility to check if the soup is hot. The people who came to apologize, brought the soup, and forced me to drink it don't need to be careful at all. No matter what happens, it is always the patient’s fault, right?"
Fu Mingyue frowned instantly. "You..."
"Get out!" Ji Yunzhuo did not want to see any of them anymore.
Li Susu trembled, tears streaming down her face. Fu Mingyue’s heart broke at the sight, and he glared at Ji Yunzhuo, burning with rage.
Ji Yunzhuo did not back down, meeting his gaze with icy indifference. Fu Mingyue was taken aback. He had never seen Ji Yunzhuo like this; she had always been submissive and long-suffering toward him. But ever since she had cracked her head, that clingy, adoring, and longing gaze had vanished, replaced only by disappointment, despair, coldness, and even resolve!
Seeing Ji Yunzhuo like this, even with a belly full of rage, Fu Mingyue found he couldn't lash out at her. He could only turn his anger elsewhere. "That old woman, Zhang Ma, is becoming more and more useless! She doesn't even know to let the soup cool before serving it! I..."
"Zhang Ma did nothing wrong." Ji Yunzhuo left Fu Mingyue no shred of dignity. "She considered that I might drink it later; it can be cooled if it’s hot, but it’s inconvenient to reheat if it’s cold. You don't need to look for a scapegoat."
"Excuse me." The nurse who walked in through the door hadn't expected so many people in the room, especially since no one had visited during the surgery. Suppressing her confusion, the nurse spoke before she even saw Ji Yunzhuo’s face. "Is the wound still painful? If it's too much, I can give you some pain medication. The surgery is over, so you don't need much anesthesia, and you won't need family to monitor you."
"The wound is fine, but I have some burns on my face."
"Huh?" The nurse looked up in shock, finally seeing what a mess Ji Yunzhuo was in.
"This..." The nurse looked suspiciously at the three of them, then hurried over to examine the burns. "Superficial burns. It’s fortunate, no need to call a doctor, but your skin is delicate..." The nurse shook her head as she examined her. "I’ll go get you some medicine."
Ji Yunzhuo nodded. "Thank you."
The nurse said nothing, but she thought to herself that being Mrs. Fu was a truly difficult role. Not only was there no one to accompany her while she was injured, but she was also drenched in soup while trying to recover. Marrying into a wealthy family was clearly no easy feat.
Once the nurse left, Ji Yunzhuo ordered them out again. "So, are you still not leaving?"
"Yunzhuo!" Ji Yunfan couldn't help but say, "Mingyue and Susu came to see you out of kindness. Even if they did something inappropriate, you shouldn't be so impolite. I’ve told you so many times, change that uncouth, rural attitude of yours; it’s for your own good."
Those words again... Ever since she had entered this home, everyone—from her father to her mother, her brother, and her sister—had complained that she was too rustic and lacked breeding. Yet, who among them had ever taught her? Furthermore, her grandfather had raised her well; she had never been impolite or vulgar.
However, in her past life, she had been insecure, sensitive, and starved for affection. She had truly believed she wasn't good enough, which was why they despised her. But even as she tried her best to please them, what had she received? She was sent to the operating table, her eyes were harvested while she was alive, and after being abandoned, no one ever asked after her or checked on her. Not a single phone call.
During those three years of blindness, she had never changed her phone number. No matter how destitute she was, she kept her line open because, in her heart, she was still humbly waiting, hoping for even one family member to reach out, even if it was just to make a single call.
None came.
In those three years, Li Susu became increasingly dazzling, until she was the center of the world's attention. As for her, she had been completely forgotten by the world.
"Don't blame anyone else; reflect on yourself." After saying this, Ji Yunfan stood up and looked at Li Susu and Fu Mingyue. "Let’s go."
Fu Mingyue nodded and glanced at Ji Yunzhuo once more. Seeing that she wasn't looking at any of them, the redness of the burns on her face and the soup stains on her chest made his heart tighten. He felt as though he might have gone a bit too far, but the words that slipped out of his mouth were, "Reflect on yourself and think about what you did wrong!"
