Chapter 8: So Doctor Pei Can Be a Rascal Too!
Li Yunchu felt that charging two yuan was not a loss at all. It was the first time she had encountered a blind date who even tried to save on the cost of a meal. Li Yunchu always split the bill evenly with her dates, never taking advantage of the men. Otherwise, they might think that if they had treated her to a meal, she would be obligated to marry them. Li Yunchu was determined to avoid such risks. She did not want to marry any of these bizarre blind date candidates.
After the waiter left, the man picked up his cup with a disdainful look. “Two yuan for a cup of lousy water? Girl, I’m not very thirsty. You can have these two cups. Aren’t you hungry? Drink more water so you don’t get fat from eating too much.” Li Yunchu was beginning to lose patience with him. Where on earth did he get the idea she was fat? Standing at 165 cm and weighing 90 jin, there was no way she could be considered overweight. She wasn’t stick-thin, but her figure was proportional. He was just trying to gaslight her.
Although Li Yunchu had a gentle nature, she was not a fool. She felt there was no need to continue this conversation and prepared to get up to settle the bill. It was only four yuan… The young woman bit her lip, telling herself to consider this a shield against bad luck. She didn’t even want to drink the water. What a strange blind date—these matchmakers were becoming increasingly unreliable.
“Where are you going, girl?” the man asked.
“Let’s end our blind date here. I don’t think we’re a good match,” she replied, grabbing her belongings and attempting to leave. But the man grabbed her wrist.
“Why are you in such a hurry? If you marry me, I won’t let you suffer.”
“Don’t all women want a house, a car, and money?” she retorted.
“Isn’t it better to get to know each other first before deciding if we’re compatible?” The man was relentless, holding tightly onto her wrist. Li Yunchu caught the scent of cigarette smoke on him and felt nauseated. She couldn’t imagine how many years she might lose from living with someone like this—at least ten, she thought.
In the end, Li Yunchu gave in, telling herself to endure just two more minutes. “I can’t smoke, nor can I tolerate secondhand smoke. It seems your addiction is severe, so we’re not compatible,” she said, her tone much colder now, hoping to make it clear she had no interest.
Unexpectedly, the man smiled. “You already mentioned secondhand smoke. Are you thinking about having children?”
He forcibly pulled Li Yunchu back to her seat. “I knew you were playing hard to get. Young girls have complicated minds. Sit down, let’s have a proper talk.”
Li Yunchu was momentarily silent. Had she really seemed to be playing coy? Maybe she needed to check her facial nerves for some disorder.
“Girl, how many kids do you want to have with me?” he asked, staring intently. “How about three? If the first is a boy, we can have two more. Nowadays, girls ask for a lot. We’ll have two girls after a son, and then use the bride price…”
Li Yunchu grabbed her bag and stood up again. “I need to use the restroom, excuse me,” she said quickly, practically running away as if being chased by a ghost.
Once inside the restroom, she finally exhaled deeply. How had she ended up with such a bizarre blind date again? She didn’t want to go back out and had to think about how to leave without being noticed by that man.
Looking up, she realized the restroom was unisex. Just as she was about to leave, she bumped into a solid wall of flesh. Her heart skipped a beat—could it be that oily man? But the scent was familiar.
Looking up, she saw Pei Siyao. How had she run into Pei Siyao again? She froze, quickly lowering her head. “Sorry, sorry,” she whispered, hoping he wouldn’t recognize her.
She tried to bypass him on the left, but his figure shifted to block her path. “Miss Li, what a coincidence,” his lazy voice came from above, freezing her in place.
“Doctor Pei… what a coincidence,” Li Yunchu stammered.
Pei Siyao looked at her with amusement. “Indeed, very coincidental.”
She felt his intense gaze and wanted nothing more than to disappear from the world. How could the world be so small? Why did she keep running into him? Her face fell.
“How’s your recovery?” he asked softly, his eyes scanning her waist. So slender, his large hand could easily encircle it.
His gaze darkened.
The last time he carried her on his back, he had inadvertently touched her waist. It was so soft, he dared not grip too hard, fearing he might break her.
Today, she was bundled up tightly. Pei Siyao’s eyes rested on her flushed face, her lashes trembling nervously. So shy? He wondered. It would be nice if her blushing was from embarrassment. She always looked so uneasy around him, as if she had just seen a ghost.
“I’m… I’m fine,” Li Yunchu forced a smile. “I can even run now.”
Her dry lips suddenly blurted out, “Doctor Pei, would you like me to run for you?”
This time, Pei Siyao was caught off guard. He simply couldn’t understand her train of thought.
She then panicked and dashed out, desperate to escape the restaurant. Today had been a disaster, like a total reversal of fortune.
But the next moment, he scooped her up like a chick.
Li Yunchu’s eyes widened as she unintentionally collided with his chest, pressed against the wall. They were so close she could hear his strong heartbeat. She looked up and saw only the prominent curve of his Adam’s apple—quite alluring.
Nervously, she swallowed hard, genuinely embarrassed. She tried to push him away but heard his low voice.
“Don’t move.”
She was annoyed—so Doctor Pei could be a rogue too!
Just as she was about to speak, the oily man’s voice reached her ears.
“Hey, didn’t that girl come to the restroom? Where did she go?”
“She ran off on her own. So pretty, and she wanted to have my kids too.”
He then noticed Pei Siyao’s back and said, “In broad daylight, you two…”
