Chapter 4: The Dog Was Not Obedient at All
Angus lowered his head to read the document and said, “Wen Li, your probation period is one month. If your purification performance reaches excellent, White Tower will consider it.”
Wen Li felt hopeful at once, momentarily forgetting how terrifying her superior had teased her. She smiled brightly and asked, “Sir, what’s the salary during my internship?”
Angus looked up at her with a puzzled glance.
His white eyes stared at her excitedly, the dark green pupils shrinking imperceptibly.
Then he lowered his head again and coldly told Wen Li, “Zero.”
White Tower Service Department Purification Center.
Wen Li pushed open the door to the purification room. The first sentinel she had booked was already there.
A golden-haired warrior, her silky long hair tied with a emerald green ribbon, dressed in a sleek combat uniform and black long boots.
Her features were gentle yet carried a heroic spirit, and her deep brown eyes looked at Wen Li with particular brightness.
A somewhat familiar face—Wen Li felt she had seen him somewhere before.
The sentinel stood up to greet her.
“Long time no see.”
At the moment their eyes met, Wen Li remembered.
This was the very one who had saved her on the battlefield. She hadn’t expected to meet him here again.
Wen Li was very grateful to him; if not for his rescue, she might already be inside a contaminated creature’s belly.
Before her was her lifesaver, so Wen Li’s attitude was naturally warm.
“Please sit, Mr. Sentinel.”
The golden-haired girl looked at Noah with gratitude. When he smiled, a small dimple appeared, sweet as honey.
“Noah sat upright, standing tall like a young poplar tree.
“You’re welcome. It’s my duty,” he said.
Wen Li nodded and continued swiping through the light screen to read his information, circling a few points to note.
Distortion index: 70%.
During purification, some distorted traits would appear, and he liked to have his head touched.
What a coincidence—she also liked to touch dog heads!
Wen Li couldn’t help but ask eagerly, “Then, Sentinel Noah, may we begin the purification?”
Noah nodded, barely restraining the sudden twitch of his ears.
“The beginning will be painful, please endure it.”
Wen Li stood and gently placed her hand on Noah’s head. The sentinel showed no resistance; instead, he obediently leaned in closer.
Feeling the soft, fluffy hair beneath her hand, she began channeling her spiritual power to start the purification.
Noah felt a wave of warmth rippling through his spiritual sea, the scent of violet flowers filling the air. A blurry blue figure wandered on a lawn.
Trembling and holding his breath, Noah feared the distortion would frighten the young guide and leave a bad impression.
After all, Wen Li’s appointments were hard to secure, and missing this one might mean waiting a long time.
The disadvantage of having a fragmented guide surfaced—the purification force was weaker, making it harder for Wen Li and only causing Noah pain.
In the last few minutes, Noah’s beast ears and tail fully emerged uncontrollably, his deep brown eyes bloodshot.
Pain and pleasure intertwined like a knife coated with an antidote scraping his spiritual sea.
Wen Li managed to clear only a small patch of contamination before faltering.
Just as she was about to lower her hand, Noah suddenly stood and grabbed her, not letting her go.
Looking down into his reddened eyes, Wen Li knew something was wrong.
Sure enough, a huge golden retriever appeared, immediately wrapping itself around Wen Li and circling her, its soft, fluffy tail wagging wildly.
The dog at her feet nudged around; Wen Li had to be careful not to step on it.
She glanced back at the tail-wagging golden-haired sentinel and said with a headache, “The purification is over, Noah.”
The golden-haired sentinel lifted his head, his deep brown eyes slightly moist, looking at Wen Li pitifully, like his spiritual form.
“I don’t want to stop.”
The golden retriever at her feet also stood up and pounced on her.
Sinking into the soft sofa, the sentinel pressed his advantage, crouching at Wen Li’s feet and offering his limp beast ears.
Feeling the warmth of his ears, Wen Li knew Noah was a bit overly excited now.
But that only made things more troublesome.
Even though he was her rescuer, Wen Li didn’t want a repeat of the previous accident. She said firmly, “Purification is finished!”
Noah silently turned his head away, looking pitiful, as if Wen Li was abandoning him.
Wen Li looked at the golden retriever who also lay down, its deep brown eyes full of grievance.
The owner’s ears were laid back; the dog’s tail drooped.
Noah completely gave up his initial gentle gentleman image, shamelessly clinging and asking, “Please, pet me.”
Both man and dog’s eyes were fixed on her.
Wen Li sighed and reluctantly waved her hand.
Noah’s ears perked up instantly, and the golden retriever gracefully jumped onto the sofa, resting its head on Wen Li’s lap.
Pinching Noah’s ears firmly, she thought, “Naughty dog, naughty dog, overtime again!”
One hand stroked the big dog’s fur, the other caressed Noah’s ears.
The sensitive ears twitched now and then, and the owner would breathe softly in pleasure.
Wen Li was curious about Noah’s tail and couldn’t help but glance over at it.
Noah caught her drift, turned, and sat sideways beside her, placing his pale yellow tail in her hand.
Wen Li stroked it from top to bottom, accidentally touching the base of his tail. He shivered as if electrocuted, blushing with a reproachful look.
Sentinels only feel no pain during purification, so they cherished the chance dearly.
Wen Li thought to herself, since they were all workers, why make things difficult for each other?
Rubbing her aching wrists, she quietly packed up, careful not to wake the man and beast lying on the sofa.
Noah lay smiling, resting on the sofa, the golden retriever on his chest rising and falling with his breath.
Wen Li left the purification room.
It was Wen Li’s sixth day of internship. Except for the mishap on the first day, the following days’ purifications went exceptionally smoothly.
No sentinels went berserk, no forced markings—just occasional overtime and small perks for these clingy sentinels.
Wen Li actually enjoyed petting these fluffy creatures, sighing that she would eventually be defeated by these adorable beings.
Declining her colleagues’ invitation, Wen Li returned to her single dormitory, took off her White Tower healer uniform, and relaxed, lying on the bed.
For worker Wen Li, nothing was better than a pleasant Sunday.
Because!
She could sleep until noon, no! Work! Today!
After staying up all night cramming, Wen Li was woken by a call from her lightbrain.
Sleepy and blurry-eyed, she answered.
A soft voice with the nasal tone of someone just waking murmured, “Who is it?”
A magnetic, deep male voice came through the line.
“Wen Li.”
Instantly awake, she sat up.
“Boss! I’m here.”
If she heard correctly, the man on the other end chuckled.
“Come to my office.” Then he hung up.
Still booting up mentally, Wen Li’s body reacted first as a worker.
The girl in her bear pajamas hurriedly got ready.
She stared blankly at her reflection in the mirror.
Inwardly, she bitterly complained: “Wait, isn’t today the weekend? Damn capitalists!”
