Chapter 6: His Doubts Remained Unresolved
Gu Fangyu, worried that Gu Hanchen might make things difficult for Jiang Qi, quickly pulled her back as Jiang Qi continued to vent passionately.
“Why are you pulling me?” Jiang Qi asked, still caught up in her anger. Even though she knew it was for her own good, she didn’t stop. “What are you afraid he’ll do? The Gu family has wronged you, and you’re not even allowed to speak up!”
Gu Hanchen said nothing, standing there silently as the insults flew. Yet the cold, oppressive aura surrounding him—the unmistakable air of a man in power—made it clear that he didn’t even consider Jiang Qi worth his attention.
“Are you really going to suffer like this?” the man suddenly spoke.
Gu Fangyu was momentarily stunned, unable to catch up with his train of thought.
He repeated with a dark expression, “Because you can’t be with Xie Chenhao, you’re willing to be treated like this?”
She: ...
Gu Fangyu suddenly realized he had misunderstood. She knew she should explain, but somehow she didn’t want to. Not once before had she not tried to distance herself from Xie Chenhao, yet the result was always the same: they branded her the villain who ruined Gu Yao and Xie Chenhao’s relationship.
So this time, Gu Fangyu chose not to argue.
She pulled Jiang Qi along. “Nothing else, Jiang Qi and I will head upstairs first.”
She tugged at Jiang Qi, who was still fuming, preparing to leave.
Suddenly, she felt herself pulled into a hard chest, as if weightless.
The man grasped her wrist and started dragging her along.
Jiang Qi stepped forward to stop them.
Gu Hanchen’s sharp eyes swept over. “Xiao Wu, are you sure you want to keep meddling in this? Before you do, think about whether the Jiang family can afford the consequences.”
Jiang Qi was not easily intimidated.
She was not afraid at all.
But Gu Fangyu didn’t want to drag her into this.
Even less did she want to implicate the Jiang family.
Before Gu Hanchen pulled her away, she quickly shoved the plastic bag she was holding into Jiang Qi’s hands, signaling her to go upstairs first.
...
The emergency exit door opened and closed.
Dim light seeped through the crack, casting a glow over the two of them.
Gu Hanchen’s tall figure radiated an oppressive presence, looking down on her.
She involuntarily stepped back until her back pressed against the wall, nowhere left to retreat.
Gu Fangyu’s heart fluttered with unease.
She thought about how last time at the hospital she was caught red-handed, and now, here she was again.
...
Trying to dispel Gu Hanchen’s suspicion wasn’t something a simple excuse about her period could easily cover.
“Your period came, yet you’re still running around?” he asked.
She lifted her eyes, her clear, dark eyes blinking rapidly, as if incredulous that he would ask such a thing.
Their gazes met.
Gu Hanchen’s face was stern, his imposing figure leaning forward bit by bit, his intimidating aura intensifying.
“The matter between Yao Yao and Xie Chenhao is settled. You’d better drop those petty schemes of yours.”
Upon hearing this, Gu Fangyu immediately lifted her chin, her face full of defiance.
It was always like this.
No matter what she did, in their eyes, it was always to deliberately sabotage Gu Yao.
Anger surged through her veins, and she glared at him fiercely.
He remained unmoved, resting one hand to the side.
In the silhouette, it seemed as though he gently enclosed her within his embrace.
“Yao Yao is pregnant, and the fetus isn’t very stable. Don’t provoke her unnecessarily.”
Gu Fangyu snapped back, pushing him lightly. “Fine, your sister is precious. If you’re really worried she’ll have problems, then keep her far away from me. Don’t come to bother me when there’s nothing wrong.”
Gu Hanchen watched as she finally revealed her claws after holding back for so long, his tone softening. “When have you ever suffered under her hands?”
She blinked, unsure if he was mocking or telling the truth.
Lowering his body again, the man pressed, “Now tell me, why didn’t you buy medicine at the hospital but came to this hotel instead?”
Gu Fangyu’s heart, which had finally settled, leapt again.
She knew this man wasn’t easy to fool.
“You should ask the experts whether illness can be timed at will,” she replied, tilting her head toward the light spilling in nearby.
The quiet space held only the sound of their breathing.
Her heart was in turmoil, but she dared not show a trace of it.
After a long moment, the man reached out and pulled her into his arms, the coldness in his eyes fading into softness. “Silver-tongued,” he murmured.
Then he lowered his head and kissed her.
Gu Fangyu blinked slowly, her unease lingering.
Had she really gotten away with it?
Since when did he become so easy to talk to?
“Focus,” he said, biting her lip lightly in reprimand.
The next moment, Gu Hanchen’s fierce kiss descended with the force of wanting to tear her apart.
...
Just as Gu Fangyu reached the door, Jiang Qi, who had been waiting behind it, yanked it open.
Jiang Qi looked her over anxiously. “How was it? Did that bastard bully you?”
Gu Fangyu looked at her helplessly and pulled her inside.
“I barely got through that hurdle.”
Now, Gu Fangyu’s main worry was whether she was pregnant.
Jiang Qi understood perfectly. The Gu family was ruthless and sharp; none could be easily fooled.
“Let’s not think about that for now,” Jiang Qi said, pushing her toward the bathroom. “Let’s test first.”
Gu Fangyu gave her a grateful look and closed the door.
Fifteen minutes later.
Jiang Qi watched as she opened the door, her face ashen. Concern gripped her heart. “Well? Are you really pregnant?”
Gu Fangyu met her eyes, full of concern and anxiety, hesitation lingering on her lips.
She handed over the pregnancy test.
Two lines.
“No good, you’ll have to get a blood test at the hospital,” Jiang Qi said.
Gu Fangyu knew that too, but with Gu Hanchen watching her like a hawk, it was impossible.
Just then, Gu Fangyu’s phone rang—it was her mother.
No matter how reluctant she was, she answered. “Mom.”
“Yao Yao just called me, saying she’s not feeling well. You’ll accompany her to the hospital later. Your annual check-up is also due, so you can do it at the same time,” her mother said firmly, leaving no room for argument.
Gu Fangyu’s face paled.
She put the call on speaker; Jiang Qi heard it too.
The two exchanged glances.
This was clearly a complaint session.
Until they saw the test results with their own eyes, Gu Yao wouldn’t give up.
“Xie Chenhao is still Yao Yao’s fiancé, so you two should keep your distance to avoid giving others any gossip,” her mother said between the lines, clearly siding with Gu Yao. “Your mother knows you’ve suffered, but as Yao Yao’s sister—and with her being pregnant and sensitive—you need to show her some consideration.”
Gu Fangyu’s hands and feet went cold, the chill creeping up from her soles through her entire body.
This was the Gu family: everyone believed she owed Gu Yao, but what had she actually done wrong?
Jiang Qi couldn’t bear to see her upset. She snatched the phone. “Auntie, Yu Yu has me here, don’t worry. I’ll go with her to the check-up. If there’s nothing wrong, I’ll hang up now—we’re going shopping later anyway.”
Gu Fangyu stared blankly as Jiang Qi reassured her and then abruptly ended the call.
Her previously heavy heart now felt strangely relieved, a bittersweet comfort washing over her.
