Volume One, Chapter Three: From Aunt to Wife

Lin Chen was both thrilled and anxious! After spinning around a few times on the spot, he finally realized he needed to call the doctor.

“Doctor! Where’s the doctor? My wife has woken up, come quickly, hurry!”

The doctor arrived promptly. At first, he was reluctant to believe that Xu Mi had awakened, until he reviewed the surveillance footage. Only then was it confirmed that the woman who had lain in a vegetative state for two months was actually showing signs of response. As the attending physician, Zhang Qilei wore an expression of disbelief.

“Doctor, she moved her hand just now. Does that mean she’s about to wake up?” Lin Chen asked excitedly.

“That’s not necessarily the case,” Zhang Qilei replied cautiously. “It only indicates that she’s gradually regaining some motor functions, but when she’ll fully regain consciousness is uncertain. Overall though, this is a positive sign.”

“Still, the fact that she can move is a good start. By the way, what’s your relationship with the patient? What did you do just now to elicit such a reaction from her?”

It was well known that Xu Mi had been confined to the hospital bed for two months, and every possible method had been tried without any effect.

“Well…” Lin Chen blushed. “I’m her husband. We just got our marriage certificate today… I didn’t do much, just whispered some words between spouses.”

“I see,” Zhang Qilei nodded in understanding.

“Since what you did worked, spend more time talking to her. Perhaps you can awaken her consciousness.”

“Can this really work? Can she hear me?”

“In theory, yes,” Zhang Qilei nodded. “There have been clinical cases where vegetative patients were awakened by family members. Your wife became vegetative due to brain damage caused by carbon dioxide poisoning from charcoal burning suicide.”

“However, her bodily functions aren’t severely damaged. The reason she hasn’t woken up is because her will to live is gone. If you can awaken her desire to survive, her chance of waking up is quite high.”

He then couldn’t help but ask, “Do you know why she tried to take her own life?”

Zhang Qilei shook his head. “That’s the patient’s privacy, and we have no right to know. In any case, just keep talking to her; it’s definitely beneficial.”

“I understand. Thank you, doctor. I’ll do my best!”

After the doctor left, Lin Chen returned to her bedside and held Xu Mi’s hand again.

It seemed she only reacted when he mentioned his mother earlier, so he decided to talk more about her.

“Wife, it’s been a long time since you saw my mom, hasn’t it? I still remember back then, you two got along so well, truly like best friends who shared everything. If only you hadn’t moved away, how great would that have been…”

He switched topics.

“I don’t know what happened in your past that made you think of suicide, but now you have me. Whatever comes, we’ll face it together. Please wake up, will you?”

After he finished speaking, Xu Mi’s fingers twitched slightly.

Lin Chen caught the movement and was ecstatic. “Wife, you heard me, didn’t you?”

It seemed she truly could hear him.

Encouraged by this, Lin Chen grew more animated.
