Chapter 24: Convinced of His Own Peerless Good Looks
Not only Gu Wei, but Gu Ning was also thrilled. The two of them surrounded Ji Sisi, eager to learn how to ride the bicycle.
If this request had come from Gu Yu, the two would likely have hesitated; after all, their eldest brother was a "cold-faced Yama" whose very presence was intimidating. But since the person offering was their gentle, kind, and affectionate sister-in-law, Gu Wei and Gu Ning felt no fear at all, nodding with excitement.
Gu Yu shook his head and chuckled; well, it seemed he had completely fallen out of favor with his younger siblings.
Following this episode, Ji Sisi completely forgot that she had stepped out under the guise of buying eggs and simply pushed the bicycle back into the courtyard.
Lin Jinghua already knew her eldest son had brought home a bicycle. Seeing that her younger son and daughter wanted to learn to ride, she promptly cleared away the clutter in the courtyard to make space for them.
Gu Wei and Gu Ning were quick learners. Before long, they had mastered it and were taking turns riding the bicycle in circles around the yard. Both of them were beaming with joy, shouting repeatedly, "I can ride a bike! I can ride a bike!"
Watching the children’s happy smiles, Lin Jinghua couldn't help but wipe away the tears in her eyes, feeling that life at this moment was better than anything even an immortal could experience.
Ji Sisi finally remembered the matter of the eggs. Fortunately, she still had plenty in her system inventory, which she could take out at any time. The spice sachet could also be used more than once; she could just boil the eggs and marinate them later to sell tomorrow. For now, it was lovely to just enjoy this rare, pleasant moment of leisure with the family.
Yet, there was someone who couldn't sit still and just had to come over and cause trouble.
Ji Manrou had been scared off by the fact that Gu Yu was still alive, but after returning home, she grew increasingly unwilling to accept it, even doubting if her own eyes had deceived her. Why was it that in her past life, when she married into the Gu family, Gu Yu died on their wedding night and she was left to be tormented by the old matriarch? Now that it was her elder sister’s turn to marry in, Gu Yu was still alive, and they had even split from the family.
Filled with resentment, Ji Manrou went to fawn over Dong Pengfei to regain her confidence, and decided to go back to her sister’s place to see the situation for herself.
As soon as she entered the courtyard, she saw Gu Ning riding the bicycle with a bright smile.
Instantly, her pent-up fury erupted. In her past life, whenever Ji Manrou was bullied by the old matriarch or the second and third aunts, she would seek a sense of superiority by preying on those weaker than herself. She specifically targeted the mother-in-law and the younger siblings, as they were her punching bags and losers in the Gu household.
But now, this little brat Gu Ning was actually riding a bicycle?
Riding a bicycle?
She didn't even have a bicycle yet. Overcome by petty jealousy and forgetting that the situation had completely changed, she lashed out with a kick, aiming to make Gu Ning fall along with the bike.
Ji Sisi, quick as a flash, grabbed Ji Manrou’s leg.
The expressions of Lin Jinghua and Gu Yu changed, and they glared furiously at Ji Manrou.
"I—I didn't mean to..." Ji Manrou stammered, momentarily stunned. She felt as though Gu Yu was a demon crawled up from hell.
The next second, it was not the demon, but Ji Sisi who took action, delivering several blows that made Ji Manrou howl in distress.
It finally reminded her that the situation was different from her past life; it was her elder sister who had married Gu Yu. Furthermore, her sister had gone mad and was now frequently hitting people without reason.
Helpless, Ji Manrou could only beg for mercy: "Sister, sister, I was wrong, I was truly wrong."
Only then did Ji Sisi stop. She pointed toward the front gate and roared, "Get out!"
In a disheveled state, Ji Manrou scrambled out of the courtyard where her sister now lived, not daring to utter a single extra word, terrified that the madwoman might chase after her to continue the beating.
Before she had run very far, Ji Manrou bumped into Dong Pengfei, who was returning from outside. Seeing her in such a state, Dong Pengfei was extremely surprised. "Manrou, what happened to you?"
Dong Pengfei had been in high spirits, having just been out drinking with his close friends. A brother of his friend had run into some trouble that couldn't be resolved by any means. Knowing that he, a member of the Dong family, carried weight in the outside world, his friend had acted as a go-between, and the man had sent Dong Pengfei a generous gift. Dong Pengfei had just gone back to speak with his father, and the man's problem was solved. As a result, he had been treated to food and drink at a private little restaurant for quite some time.
He was shocked to return and find Ji Manrou in this condition. He knew that the reborn Ji Manrou was very particular about her appearance and trends, always striving to present herself as an exquisite girl in front of him. But now, her clothes and hair were a mess, and her face was streaked with tears.
"Brother Pengfei," Ji Manrou said, her voice filled with sobs, half-flirting and half-complaining, "My elder sister hit me."
"I heard she was kicked out by the Gu family as soon as she got married, so I went to see them out of kindness. Perhaps I said something unpleasant, and she flew into a rage and started hitting me without rhyme or reason."
While her words were half-truth and half-lie, the grievance she felt was real. Even when she was being tormented in the Gu household in her past life, the old woman only dared to use nasty words to belittle her behind her back or in passing. To be physically attacked so brazenly—other than that madwoman Ji Sisi, Ji Manrou had never seen a woman like this in two lifetimes.
Dong Pengfei was left stunned. To be honest, he had witnessed Ji Sisi’s current level of physical prowess. Ever since the sisters swapped marriages and Ji Sisi married Gu Yu, her temperament had changed drastically.
Dong Pengfei couldn't help but ponder: could it be that Sisi had been so stimulated by not being able to marry him that she had changed?
Ji Manrou was still pouring out her grievances, but seeing Dong Pengfei lost in thought, she became displeased. She tugged at his sleeve. "Brother Pengfei, are you even listening to me?"
The woman’s eyes were like hooks; Dong Pengfei felt his heart tremble. "I am listening, Manrou. Your sister is truly going too far. Even if she was slighted by her in-laws, she shouldn't take it out on you."
Dong Pengfei became increasingly certain that Ji Sisi had gone mad because of unrequited love. She must be jealous that her younger sister could marry him, which was why she was acting like a lunatic and attacking Manrou. It must be so. At this moment, Dong Pengfei stood tall, feeling that he was handsome beyond measure.
He tossed his hair back and made an expression he considered incredibly charming. "Manrou, don't worry, I will definitely get justice for you."
"Brother Pengfei, I knew you were the best to me."
And so, the two scoundrels began to act lovey-dovey once more.
Ji Manrou regained her immense confidence. Even if Gu Yu hadn't died this time, perhaps it was just not yet his time. After all, because of their marriage swap, the date of Gu Yu and her sister’s wedding had been moved up. She still had faith in Dong Pengfei. No matter what happened to Gu Yu, Ji Sisi had married him and was saddled with three burdens; how could her life possibly be easy? As for herself, she only needed to wait until she married Dong Pengfei, and then he would start his own business. At that point, she would just sit at home and enjoy the good life.
Thinking this, Ji Manrou felt cheerful once again.
